Adaptive Sports School Program launches
In February 2023 we launched our Adaptive Sports School Program and delivered our first session in Warrah Specialist School!
We’re excited to launch our in-school Adaptive Sports School Program in 2023, bringing inclusive multi-sport and well-being activities to children and young people with disability, including physical, sensory and intellectual disabilities.
Our program builds on our existing work in schools supporting children and young people reach their full potential and reduce barriers to physical activity.
Program sessions are informed by the Australian Physical Literacy Framework and we use fun and engaging activities for skill development. It’s great to see the children come out of their shells as they participate in physical activity in a safe and welcoming environment.
Our coaches are fully trained with the relevant checks. As a Work Intergration Social Enterprise (WISE) , most of our coaches are from a refugee background and speak multiple languages to ensure sessions remain as accessible as possible for children from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse backgrounds.
We kicked off the program last week at Warrah Specialist School, supporting their students with a fun and intensive session with a range of games to support skill development.
Sport Development Officer, Merna Yalda commented:
“It’s fun for the kids to explore new games in a safe environment with their friends. I love meeting excited new faces and helping them alter the games so it has their own touch. For example, when we were playing with the mushroom shaped parachute tent the students wanted to sing the ‘mushroom song’”.
Sports Coach, Kamila Asghari, noted the positive effects of the activities on all involved.
“It was a great day meeting the students and teachers. All the teachers were very friendly... The kids had a fun day especially when we played the Mr Wolf and mushroom games.”
Special thanks to Leanne Hall for inviting us into their lovely school.
“Thank you for coming into our school and running our games morning. The children and our staff found the activities to be fun and engaging. The trainers were understanding of the students’ needs and abilities, and gave us some great ideas for active and fun games we can continue with the students. A great program!”
