We conducted pre- and post- program surveys of our 6-month pilot program at Lurnea Community Hub in 2023 in partnership with South Western Sydney Local Health District to understand the impact of the program on participants. Preliminary data reveals the following outcomes:
Outcomes
-
Pre-program 39.1% of participants felt lonely sometimes, often or always. Post-program this had reduced to 30%.
-
In the surveys, seniors were asked how often they felt connected and close to other people in the last 4 weeks. In the pre-program surveys 37.5% responded they felt connected and close less than half, some of or at no time. In the post-program surveys this decreased to 18%. This was a 50% decrease in feelings of isolation.
-
Pre-program 56.25% of participants did not take part in a physical activity like tai chi, exercise classes etc. By the end of the program this had decreased to 28%. The number of participants engaging in physical activity increased by almost double for every metric from 1-2 times, 3-4 times and 5-7 times. The number of people engaging in physical activity 1-2 times per week rose from 28.13% to 50%.
-
In the 7 days prior to the program only 26.56% of participants took a walk 5-7 times outside the home/yard for any reason. Post program this increased to 42%.
-
Pre-program responses revealed only 15.63% of respondents spent less than 3 hours sitting (e.g. watching tv, using a computer etc). Post-program responses showed this had increased to 28%. There were reductions in those sitting for 3-6 hours and 6-9 hours per day.

"I've been to the gentle exercises, Tai Chi and Art classes and love them all. It's been a blessing discovering this group.
This group has changed my life as I didn't have any friends, due to always being busy with work and children. Now I have a lively group of ladies that I get to see twice a week. I've become happier and I really look forward to these classes. I'm also learning art which I'm really enjoying, I've never been even a little bit artistic but now I can create. Thank you to all who have made this group possible. So many of us really need it."
- Colette, program participant

"I just wanted to reach out and let you know what a difference the sessions at Lurnea have made to my mum's happiness and wellbeing. She can hardly hear anything but she goes almost everyday and absolutely loves the connection and the sessions. She talked about what she does and what's coming up. Things like this are so incredibly important for our senior community members. A big thanks."
- Marly, daughter of program participant
-
"I've got to know so many people who I've passed at various local places, actually gone to school with or been at the same school as their children and never spoken to over all the years I've lived in the community. Even spoke to a lady the other day who lives close to my mum and who I knew when I was a child but didn't recognise while speaking to her. It was a gasp and laugh out moment when she said where she lived."
- Elma, program participant
-
"This program has opened up a whole new world... I was in tears during the art class because I was laughing so much. You walk away from this thinking, 'Well this isn't a bad day, not a bad day at all."
- Jennifer, program participant after attending an art class
