Adaptive Sports & Employment and Training

In partnership with Special Olympics Australia we’re supporting the delivery of the pilot NSW Inclusive Sports Program to children with intellectual disabilities and autism. Collective Leisure was recognised as Exceptional community partner at the 2021 Zest Awards led by Western Sydney Community Forum.

Special Olympics Australia is part of a global sporting community for people with an intellectual disability.

Globally, adults with intellectual disabilities are more than two times as likely to be obese compared to adults without intellectual disabilities. We know from Sport Australia’s AusPlay survey that Australian’s are less likely to be active if they are a person with disability.

To provide a solution, Special Olympics Australia, through the NSW Inclusive School Sports Program, are expanding their presence in schools to deliver health, well-being and social inclusion through increased opportunities to be physical active.

Program Objectives

  • More children are active every day

  • More children are developing their physical literacy

  • Teachers are more confident delivering sport and physical activity

  • Sport and PE lessons are more inclusive and of a higher quality

  • Strong relationships are built with community coaches

  • Strong links are built with community sports clubs and providers

What we’re doing

  • Providing training and employment for young people from refugee backgrounds to become sports coaches

  • Delivering the program in 11 schools, to children with an intellectual disability and autism
