Kick-Off for Minds Collective: Using Football to Support Mental Health Recovery

Minds Collective, our new community football initiative, has officially launched at the new synthetic sports field at Perry Park Recreation Centre in Alexandria, with the goal of supporting individuals in their mental health recovery. Delivered by coaches from Collective Leisure and backed by leading partners, the 12-week program provides a unique blend of physical activity and social interaction, fostering improved mental well-being and a sense of community.

Designed for individuals aged 18-40 and referred by mental health services, the Minds Collective Football program includes a one-hour football session focused on drills, techniques, and games in a fun, positive environment. By enhancing physical skills, building confidence, and increasing physical activity, the program aims to help participants reduce social isolation and boost overall well-being. Following each session, participants enjoy an additional hour of socialising over refreshments, encouraging community connection and support.

Collective Leisure has partnered with the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), whose team is conducting ethics-approved research on the program’s impact. Generous support from Thread Together has ensured that each participant receives brand-new football boots, while the City of Sydney has provided both the venue and funding for the initiative.

“We’re thrilled to see how Minds Collective is growing in just it’s first four weeks,” said CEO David Burns. “This program brings people together through football, helping them on their journey toward mental health recovery, while reducing isolation, building resilience and making friends.”

As Minds Collective progresses, it is already making a meaningful difference in the lives of its participants, with growing interest from the community and mental health services alike.
